2006 Saab Aero X concept
Concept cars are always fun to look at. They give us a rare glimpse into the minds of carmakers and reveal clues as to what’s to come. Although most never make production, there are usually a number of elements from them that make it onto future models. Saab has created a number of intriguing concepts over the years but the one that arguably stood out the most was the Saab Aero X.
Unveiled in 2006 at the Salon International de l’Auto, the concept showcased a unique design that stood out and definitely made a lasting impression.
Powered by a 2.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine running on pure ethanol, capable of producing 400hp, the car had a reported top speed of 158 mph (255 km/h).
It was a powerful concept that offered the whole package. It was visually stunning and quite powerful, which is all you can really expect from an extravagant concept.
The thing that stood out the most about the car’s design were its doors. A cockpit canopy, connecting the doors with the car’s windscreen, lifted up giving the driver access to the car.
Although this isn’t a recent invention, having appeared on concept cars throughout the 20th century, this feature is rarely used on production cars due to its impracticality.
The Saab Aero X’s styling was quite sporty and aggressive, however it remained grounded in reality without crossing the border into the “bizarre” category.
Upon launch, the car was very well received both by enthusiasts and critics as well as the public.
At one point rumour circulated speculating the car would appear in one of the Transformers films, however these proved to be false.
The car’s appearance earned it a cult following, with many urging the brand to build a production version of the Saab Aero X.
It is unclear at the moment whether the car will ever enter production, however with it begin ten years since the car’s reveal, that’s very unlikely.
The Saab Aero X remains one of the most interesting concept of the last decade. It’s great to look at and offers a lot performance-wise, which is why it’s a real shame that the vehicle never entered production.
