Italdesign Aztec – two cockpits concept car
It’s a known fact that concept cars tend to be a little over the top. They allow manufacturer’s to think outside the box and experiment with concepts they would never be able to implement on their production vehicles. Not only are concept cars fun to look at but they also give us a glimpse into the future of car technology. Many fantastic concept cars have been produced over the years however many of them are never intended for production. Today we’ll take a look to Italdesign Aztec.
The vehicle that we are going to look at today is somewhat very unique. Produced in 1988 by Italdesign, we are of course talking about the Italdesign Aztec.
What makes the car so unique you may wonder? Well, perhaps it’s the fact that it has two cockpits meaning the driver and passenger are separated. That’s right, the vehicle’s unique design requires the passenger and driver to communicate over an intercom.
Apart from the obviously unique seats, the Aztec sports a rather simple design. It resembles sports cars of the 1980’s however it still manages to look fresh and different from all the other vehicles available at the time.
As for performance, the Aztec included a 250bph Audi five-cylinder engine, pretty standard really, which is surprising considering the vehicle’s futuristic appearance.
Originally, the Aztec was merely meant to be a concept however 18 were made in the end. 50 were planned however the vehicles price and lack of interest resulted in the production ending sooner than expected.
Today, although hard to find, an Aztec will cost you around $75,000. Upon its release a new Aztec cost around $225,000.
There’s no denying that the Italdesign Aztec is a unique car. Although the idea of having two separate cockpits for the driver and passengers never really took off, we’re glad that the car was made. By venturing into the unknown, Italdesign gave us a glimpse into the future.
